Dog Packs

No matter the size or breed of your dog, they can participate in your hike and will provide themselves with a sense of purpose, or just work off extra energy, if they are big dogs. Dog packs are great because they allow your dog to carry their own food and water. Most dogs can carry up to 25% of their body weights. However, some packing breeds such as Huskies or Malamutes can carry up to 30% of their weights.
You can take some short training hikes to get a better idea of your dog’s abilities. When buying a pack, you want to look for one that is non-restrictive, waterproof, and has bags that are placed over the dogs’ shoulders. If you plan on using a pack with your dog for the first time, go on a few walks before the trip so that the dog can gradually get used to a loaded backpack.
